Same-sex Marriage Licenses in Virginia are put on Hold after SCOTUS Issues Stay

What is the status of same-sex marriage licenses in Virginia? On August 20, 2014, the Supreme Court issued a stay on a ruling striking down Virginia’s ban on gay marriages by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. The 4th Circuit’s 2-1 decision would have paved the way for Virginia same-sex marriages to begin on August 20, 2014.

The Supreme Court took similar action on July 18, 2014, when it issued a stay allowing Utah to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages while the state appeals a federal appeals court ruling striking down the state’s ban on such marriages.

We happily represent same-sex spouses.
